From much of Nassau County, JFK is closer than Midtown: Garden City is about 13 miles from the airport, about 21 min without traffic on the Southern State and the Belt. Further out in Suffolk, Stony Brook University is about 48 miles from JFK, around an hour on a clear road.
Westchester usually flies from LaGuardia. White Plains is about 25 miles away down the Hutchinson River Parkway, about 33 min without traffic, and JFK is about 15 minutes further on the Van Wyck.
The train works if you live near a station and travel light, but from the LIRR or Metro-North you still change for the AirTrain at Jamaica, or for a bus to LaGuardia. A car picks you up at the door at the hour you choose, including the 4 am departures no train is running for.

From Long Island, rides to JFK mostly follow the Southern State Parkway to the Belt; rides to LaGuardia take the Northern State or the Long Island Expressway to the Grand Central. From Westchester, the Hutchinson River Parkway leads to the Whitestone Bridge and on to LaGuardia or the Van Wyck for JFK.
Weekday mornings toward the city and late afternoons back out are the slow times. For an early departure we suggest leaving more margin than you think: an airport run at 6 am can still meet traffic near the airports.
