Driving from NYC to Philadelphia: time, tolls and the train

The drive from Manhattan to Center City Philadelphia is about 95 miles, about 1 h 44 min without heavy traffic, with about $21 in tolls one way with E-ZPass. Here is the route, the tolls as of November 2026, and how it compares with the train.

Updated November 6, 2026 · All travel guides

Most drives from Manhattan to Philadelphia leave through the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel and run south on the New Jersey Turnpike. For Center City, the usual exit is Interchange 4, then across the Delaware on the Ben Franklin Bridge; for Northeast Philadelphia or the I-95 corridor, Interchange 6 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The New Jersey part is quick when it is clear and slow when it isn’t: the first 20 miles out of the city and the approaches to the bridges are where the time goes.

How long does it take to drive from NYC to Philadelphia?

About about 1 h 44 min from Times Square to Center City with clear roads. On weekday afternoons, leaving Manhattan between 3 and 7 pm, allow two and a half hours or more; Friday afternoons and holiday weekends can be worse.

Early mornings and evenings after 8 pm are usually close to the clear-road time. Coming back to New York, the slow part is the approach to the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels.

How much are the tolls?

With an E-ZPass, the Turnpike to Interchange 4 and the Ben Franklin Bridge add up to about $21 one way. The DRPA bridges charge only westbound, so you don’t pay them again coming home, but the tunnel toll into New York applies on the return, from $14.79 with an E-ZPass.

New Jersey E-ZPass holders pay less on the Turnpike off-peak. Peak hours on the Turnpike are weekdays 7 to 9 am and 4:30 to 6:30 pm, and all day at weekends, based on when you enter.

Train or car

Amtrak runs Acela and Northeast Regional trains from New York Penn Station to Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station; fares change with demand. The cheaper rail route is NJ Transit from Penn Station to Trenton, then SEPTA’s Trenton Line into Center City. NJ Transit fares are set by station; its current fares took effect July 1, 2026.

If you are going from Midtown to near 30th Street, the train is hard to beat. The car is the easier choice for a group, for luggage, for an address in the suburbs, or for a game at the stadiums in South Philadelphia, where a door-to-door ride saves a transfer at each end.
