NYC to Boston: train, bus or car

Three ways to get from New York to Boston: Amtrak, an intercity bus, or a car up I-95, about 212 miles and about 3 h 41 min without heavy traffic. What each is good for, and what a private car costs.

Updated November 6, 2026 · All travel guides

New York to Boston is one of the busiest trips in the Northeast, and all three options are popular for good reasons. The train is the most predictable, the bus is usually the cheapest, and a car goes from your door to theirs on your schedule.

Fares for Amtrak and the bus companies change with demand and how early you book, so we don’t quote them here; check the operators for your date.

The train

Amtrak’s Acela and Northeast Regional trains both run from New York Penn Station to Boston, stopping at Back Bay and ending at South Station. Acela is the faster, pricier service; the Regional makes more stops. You can work at a table, and you skip I-95 entirely.

Amtrak warns that Portal North Bridge work affects Northeast Corridor trains from October 9 to November 15, 2026, so check your train before you travel in that window.

The bus

Several companies run buses between Manhattan and Boston, usually the cheapest way to make the trip. They use the same highways as a car, so the trip takes as long as the traffic does, and on Friday afternoons that can be a lot longer than the timetable.

The drive

It is about 212 miles from Midtown to downtown Boston, about 3 h 41 min with clear roads. The slow spots are getting out of New York through the Bronx and southern Connecticut, and the approach to Boston itself. Leaving early in the morning or after 7 pm makes the biggest difference.

A car makes the most sense for a group that would otherwise buy four train tickets, for a family with luggage, for a move to college, or for an address in the suburbs that is a long way from South Station.

Which one should you choose?

  • One person, travelling light, city centre to city centre: Amtrak.
  • The lowest fare and a flexible schedule: the bus.
  • A group, luggage, a suburban address or a late-night trip: a private car.
