How much is a taxi from JFK to Manhattan?

The TLC sets a flat fare of $70 between JFK and any address in Manhattan, in either direction. On top of it come a $0.50 MTA surcharge and a $1.00 improvement surcharge, a $5.00 rush-hour surcharge on weekdays from 4 to 8 pm, a $2.50 congestion surcharge for trips south of 96th Street and the $0.75 congestion pricing toll south of 60th Street, plus any bridge or tunnel toll and the tip.

The Port Authority puts the extra fees at $2.75 to $8.50 depending on the time of day and where you are going, before tolls and the tip. Taxis wait at the stand outside each terminal; no booking needed.

The AirTrain with the subway or the LIRR

The AirTrain links the terminals with Jamaica and Howard Beach stations. Riding between terminals is free; leaving the airport costs $8.75, paid by tapping a contactless card, phone or OMNY card at the station. Children under five ride free.

At Jamaica you can take the subway (the E, J or Z) or the Long Island Rail Road; at Howard Beach, the A train. The subway costs $3.00. The LIRR from Jamaica to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison takes about 20 minutes and costs $5.25 off-peak or $7.25 at peak times with a CityTicket.

It is the cheapest way in, about $11.75 by subway. The catch is the bags: stairs and turnstiles at the stations, rush-hour crowds, and the walk from the station to your hotel.

How long does it take to drive from JFK to Manhattan?

Without traffic, about 40 to 45 minutes to Times Square and Midtown West, a little less to Grand Central, and about 40 minutes to Lower Manhattan. Midtown rides usually take the Van Wyck and the Long Island Expressway to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel; Upper Manhattan the Grand Central Parkway and the RFK Bridge; Downtown the Belt Parkway.

Weekday afternoons from about 3 pm and Friday evenings are the slow times: allow 75 to 90 minutes. Heading to JFK for a flight, leave Manhattan with that margin plus the time your airline asks for check-in.

Where to meet your car at each terminal

JFK is in the middle of a large rebuild, and the Port Authority warns that construction is slowing every kind of pickup and drop-off. Here is where pickups are as of November 2026:

  • Terminals 1, 4 and 8: rides are generally picked up in front of the terminal; follow the signs after baggage claim.
  • Terminals 5 and 7: since May 2025, ride app and car service pickups have moved to a lot at the Howard Beach AirTrain station. Take the AirTrain from your terminal; it is free within the airport. Drop-offs are still at the terminal.
  • Taxis: at the taxi stand outside each terminal.
  • With RoolDrive: add your flight number, and when your chauffeur arrives you get a notification and can call or message them to confirm exactly where to meet.

Which one should you choose?

  • Travelling light, daytime, lowest cost: the AirTrain and the subway.
  • Going to Penn Station or Grand Central with a small bag: the AirTrain and the LIRR.
  • You want a car without booking: the taxi stand, at the $70 flat fare plus extras.
  • Bags, children, a late flight or a meeting to get to: a private car booked ahead, at one price that already includes the tolls.
